21 June is celebrated as International Yoga Day worldwide. Yoga is an ancient Indian practice which is know for its various health benefits. Yoga enhances immunity, relaxes mind and strengthens body. '

Historical context

It was proposed by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the United Nations Assembly in 2014. The proposal got widely accepted in the assembly. The first international Yoga was celebrated on 21 June 2015. 
Benefits of Yoga
Yoga offers numerous benefits, including:

  • Improves flexibility &  posture.
  • Strengthens muscles and bones.
  • Increases concentration, mental clarity and peace.
  •  It reduces stress, anxiety, and depression.
  • enhances immunity and overall health.
  • Promotes inner peace and emotional balance.

Importance of celebrating Yoga Day 
In the fast-paced life people are exposed to stress and many health issues. This day is aimed to inform people about the benefits of this simple practice of yoga. Celebrating Yoga Day will help in spreading awareness about the benefits of doing Yoga. Main objective of celebrating this on large scale in schools and colleges as well as in  public gatherings is to  motivate people to incorporate this practice in their day-to-day life . 

Themes

Every year a new theme is selected for the celebration.  Last year Yoga for One Earth, One Health was the theme for International yoga day 2025. The theme declared for 2026 is Yoga for Healthy Ageing.  Kolkata will be the hosting city this year.

21 june is celebrated every year as the international yoga day .  It is  more than just a celebration,  it is a collective step toward a healthier and more peaceful world. By practicing yoga regularly, we can improve our physical fitness, mental health, and overall quality of life.
